Overview
School of Aeronautics and Astronautics

In 1935, Shanghai Jiao Tong University established its first aviation program, nurturing remarkable talents in aerospace, including the distinguished scientist Qian Xuesen, recipient of the National Highest Science and Technology Award Gu Songfen, chief designer of the J-7 aircraft Tu Jida, and chief designer of the Y-10 aircraft Ma Fengshan. Actively aligning with national strategies, the university reinstated the Department of Aerospace Engineering in 2002, founded the Space Technology Research Institute in 2005, and established the School of Aerospace Engineering in 2008. The school comprises several departments, including Aircraft Design, Aerospace Information and Control, Aerospace Propulsion, the Near-Space Research Center, the Wu Zhenyuan Aerodynamics Center, and the Aerospace System Engineering Research Center. It boasts a first-level doctoral program in "Aerospace Science and Technology" and a postdoctoral mobile station, with "Aircraft Design" recognized as one of the first national defense characteristic disciplines.

The school is home to a dedicated faculty of 87 members, led by academicians and distinguished experts, including two academicians, one member of the International Academy of Astronautics, one chief scientist from the "973" Program, two experts from the National Special Recruitment Program, two "Changjiang Scholars" distinguished professors, one recipient of the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund, one expert from the National Young Talent Program, and several other national and municipal awardees.

The school is committed to cultivating high-quality, interdisciplinary talents in aerospace, instilled with a strong sense of national pride, a solid professional foundation, a keen interest in the industry, and lofty academic aspirations, ensuring precise training and delivery of talents to the sector. Aerospace Engineering has been selected as a national-level first-class discipline, undergoing comprehensive development in line with professional accreditation; in collaboration with Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, it has established a joint training base for engineering master's students, fostering high-level innovative talents in civil aircraft system engineering. Leveraging distinctive programs like the MoHao International Class, it aims to cultivate top-tier talents with a "global perspective and a patriotic spirit," capable of "melding the ancient with the modern and designing for the future."

The school actively addresses major national strategic needs, enhancing the construction of innovative platforms and teams, and has established several joint research centers and platforms in collaboration with organizations such as Aviation Industry Corporation of China, Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, China Aerospace Engines, and China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation. This initiative promotes the coordinated development of the local economy and the aerospace industry, with research and development bases established in Shanghai, Chengdu, and Chongqing. Targeting the forefront of international academia, it is expanding innovative directions such as near-space airships, on-orbit space services, and advanced composite materials, achieving a series of internationally advanced original results.

Upholding the philosophy of "openness, equality, cooperation, and sharing," the school engages in educational and research collaborations and academic exchanges with numerous renowned universities and research institutions worldwide. It hosts the ICASSE International Conference and has created the international journal "Aerospace Systems," continuously deepening international cooperation and exchange. Supported by the "Belt and Road" initiative and the wide-body aircraft project, it collaborates with Moscow State Technical University of Civil Aviation to develop a dual-degree talent training program, having received approval for a Sino-foreign cooperative education project from the Ministry of Education, establishing a distinctive international educational framework.

All faculty and students at the School of Aerospace Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University embody the spirit of "daring to be the first" and the ethos of "serving the nation through aerospace," striving with resilience and determination, focusing on distinctive breakthroughs, and enhancing development through substantive growth. The school aspires to establish an internationally renowned, domestically top-tier aerospace institution, leveraging the advantages of a high-level comprehensive university and interdisciplinary innovation platform, committing to intrinsic development, innovation breakthroughs, value-led education, alignment with national strategic needs, and an international educational approach, thus forging a distinguished aerospace brand and advancing the development of top-tier disciplines that contribute to the nation's aerospace technology endeavors.

In line with the concept of "openness, equality, cooperation and sharing", the College carries out education, scientific research cooperation and academic exchanges with many famous foreign universities and research institutions.
